Wayne Smith is the chairman and chief executive officer of Tennessee-based Community Health Systems Inc. Smith earned a bachelor’s in education and a master’s in educational administration (1969) from Auburn, and a master’s degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas (1972). Smith is former chairman of the Federation of American Hospitals and The Nashville Chamber of Commerce, and has been named one of the “100 Most Influential People in Healthcare” by Modern Healthcare magazine for each of the past 14 years. In addition, Mr. Smith was voted one of the top CEOs in the healthcare facilities sector in Institutional Investor magazine for eight consecutive years. Mr. Smith was a 2010 Lifetime Achievement award winner. Wayne and his wife Cheryl ’68 have one daughter. He was confirmed by the Senate as an Auburn Trustee on Feb. 14, 2013, and his term will expire in February 2020.
